LEGO’s 3-foot Wind Turbine Set Comes with Bricks Made From Plants

On August 1st LEGO released their first sustainably sourced bricks. The bricks are made from a plastic derived from sustainably sourced sugarcane, and were released as Lego trees and leaves and little Lego bushes aptly called “Plants from Plants.” But recently LEGO have come out with their first set to incorporate these bricks, and fittingly the set is wind turbine.

In March the company announced their intention to start creating their bricks from more sustainable sources. Although the bricks aren’t biodegradable they’re still a step in the right direction. They’re made from 98% polyethylene sourced exclusively from sugarcane, and are within the World Wildlife Fund’s sustainability guidelines.

At the end of last month, during NYC Climate Change Week, the company unveiled an 826 piece wind turbine set. The set includes a 3-foot turbine towering over a small farmhouse. Lego partnered with Vestas, a Danish wind turbine company, for the project, and the “Vestas Wind Turbine” set is available now from LEGO.

As well as a small farmhouse, and those “Plants from Plants” elements, the set also includes a turbine technician, a little dog, and many other little features that should keep amateurs and enthusiasts happy.

This news comes at a fitting time when LEGO, beating their own goal by three years, now balances 100% of their energy use with renewables following a $6 billion investment in two offshore wind farms. So although “renewable” and “sustainable” might not be the first concepts to come to mind when you think of LEGO, they sure seem to be working hard to change that.
