Most Popular Egg Dishes

For me, eggs have always been a staple food item. The perfect mix of simplicity and versatility. It’s easy to always have eggs on hand, and there’s just so much you can do with them!

So that got me wondering about just what people are doing with their eggs. It’s an important question, as anyone who’s seen Runaway Bride knows.

Now, if we’re going on popularity in terms of how often a dish is prepared and eaten, the winner is undoubtedly something basic such as over easy. (Sunny-side up comes in a close second according to Google Trends.)

But what about proper egg dishes? Not just how you order an egg solo (Han’s lesser known little brother), but what’s your favorite egg-infused meal?

According to the popular delivery service GrubHub, the most popular egg dish is a bacon, egg and cheese croissant. I can buy that; it’s a delicious breakfast sandwich! Buttery and crispy perfection!

Another popular egg dish is the quiche. Like most egg dishes, there’s a lot of variety in how you choose to make your quiche. You can include different vegetables or meats or keep it vegetarian. Personally, I love a good quiche because it feels like eating a pie without all the extra sugary calories. Add a bit of spinach and it’s practically a health food!

With rice being one of the most popular foods, if not the most popular food, in the world, it’s no wonder that fried rice with egg is a popular dish too. Another simple dish with endless variety. Just throw whatever you have lying around into the pan, and voilà!

Now we’re getting more into non-breakfast categories. While most people probably associate eggs primarily with breakfast, particularly in the West, there are quite a bit of non-breakfast dishes featuring eggs too, as the previous two examples show. And who’s to say you can’t have breakfast for dinner? That was one of my favorite things to do with this next dish when I spent a few months in northern New Mexico. I absolutely fell in love with huevos rancheros. They make for a hearty breakfast, and a tasty dinner, especially with a side of homemade tortillas.

To be honest, I never really understood omelettes and would prefer scrambled eggs. I think people just like feeling fancy by ordering something with a French name. Still, there’s no denying that omelettes, despite their difficulty to make, are a popular egg dish. Getting yourself a good omelette pan is key to making them without the headache.

Finally, for some godawful reason, egg salad is a very popular dish. It’s just eggs mixed with mayonnaise, for the most part, seasoned and garnished as you wish. The simplicity is supposed to make up for the taste, which is probably why it’s a pot luck favorite.

Because of the sheer abundance and versality of eggs, there are countless dishes available to make with them. We didn’t even get into baking with them and making awesome desserts like flan!
